LIFE LONG SONG LTD
Music across the generations
Life Long Song Ltd is a social enterprise created to improve and extend the offer of active music in its community and across the generations. We aim to provide active and enjoyable opportunities for older people, but also other sections of the community, to be creative with music and to share it with others.
Life Long Song seeks to deliver quality musical experiences and to empower others to share and initiate musical engagement.
WHO WE ARE
Life Long Song subscribes to the belief that everyone has musical skills and interests which can be nurtured and encouraged regardless of experience, whether this is considered to be plentiful or limited. Everyone can learn something whatever their age or prior learning. There is a sense of achievement and acceptance through music activity. Music is unique in the way it brings cohesion and cooperation to groups and communities. It can transport us back to the past but also keeps us in the moment bringing a sense of validation and wellbeing. Where there is severe dementia music can unlock and help to restore a person’s identity.
'SINGING FOR WELLBEING'
Central to Chorley town and easily accessible, this weekly session is an opportunity for all to share music in a variety of ways. The focus is enjoyment and gaining confidence through supported music making rather than on performance. It is a workshop with a difference where everyone's contribution is valued. Songs are either well known or easy to pick up. We combine some with our beautiful tuned instruments or you may have an instrument of your own that we could incorporate.
With funding from 'Community Foundation for Lancashire' this session takes place at Galloway's Centre, 1a Farrington Street, Chorley PR7 1DY
Every Tuesday 1.30 - 3pm. (Please contact Life Long Song to check start dates for early 2020)
A fun session of songs, rhymes and music to share with baby.
Sessions have been developed for babies from the earliest stages until they become more mobile at about one year. Parents and carers are encouraged to take the opportunity of sharing songs and activities in a calm but stimulating atmosphere. Babies and adults love the chance to get out and socialise and with ideas to use at home it all helps with the bonding process.
Contact us for more details of sessions.
Life Long Song is delighted to work on projects with Homestart Central Lancashire including a book themed session for families with pre-school children and a babies session.
MUSIC IN DAYCARE AND RESIDENTIAL
Our programme of active music for older people was developed over several years at 'Genesis Care NW' in Chorley. Janet and Ali then set up a social enterprise and were awarded funding from the Adactus Breathe Award to deliver further projects at a residential setting Eliot Gardens in Wigan. It has worked well for people living with dementia, Parkinson's Disease and other conditions. We aim for high levels of engagement from participants by matching their abilities, needs and interests wherever possible. We strive to chime with individual and group preferences. We always try to ensure that participants feel comfortable and their abilities are valued and respected, making sessions fun and pleasurable. This leads to positive encounters and the development of good relationships with staff and the care home community.
We would recommend that managers, activity coordinators and anyone with an interest in this field, click on the following links:-
'A Choir in Every Care Home' which is a great source of advice and resources.
The Utley report Jan 2018 'What would life be-without a song or a dance what are we?' is also a great validation of the work that we do. (Scroll down the page to find the link for the report as a pdf)
Playlist for life is a charity based in Glasgow but serving all the UK. It supports the making of personal playlists so that people living with dementia are able to access music personal to them and use the power of music in managing the condition.
A new initiative 'Music for Dementia 2020' aims to make music accessible to all living with dementia by 2020. We are excited and keen to make this happen.
Janet from Life Long Song visited Charnley Fold Resource Centre to mark Dementia Awareness Week 2019 and Lancashire Post covered the event. See what happened when participants got their hands on our lovely instruments.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
ADACTUS AWARD WINNERS
Winners of the Adactus Breathe Investment Grant award for Older People in December 2016 for residential projects. Votes were collected from the communities sharing our music and we felt very honoured to receive such recognition.
Having launched our social enterprise in autumn 2015 this helped to validate our approach and acknowledge the benefits of active music.
Janet and Ali with the award
Many of our musicians are keen to try different things. Responding to this we were able to put in ukelele workshops for beginners. African drumming is another idea that we are currently exploring. We feel that community music should reach all age groups, young, old and in between. We are keen to make inter-generational music happen! There is nothing more rewarding for all concerned than when the very young and those a little older share their music!
Get in touch if you would like to help us develop some of our ideas.
A spin-off from 'Singing for Wellbeing' we have run a beginner's workshop every few months. Participants have banded together to form Chorley's first ukelele group which is strumming along nicely.
Our next ukelele workshop is on Sat 11th January at Primrose Gardens, Chorley.

A chance to get out and get musical!
'Singing for Wellbeing' is currently breaking for the Christmas period.Normally on from 1.30 to 3pm - please contact for start dates in January 2020.
Our singing workshop session has been running now for over two years and is a great way to get out, get moving, get singing and get playing. Ukeleles often feature in the workshop as do other percussion and therapy instruments. There is always a good sing and we frequently surprise ourselves with new accompaniments and ideas - all very easy and accessible. As Life Long Song's beacon project in central Chorley everyone is welcome to join us for a cuppa and check out what we do.
Come and join us at Galloway's Centre, 1a Farrington Street, Chorley PR7 1DY.
